Building and Safety ensures building construction compliance with State Building Codes and local ordinances through plan check, permit, and inspection services.

Inspection Line

Please call by 4 pm to schedule an inspection the following day. Thursday and Friday calls roll over to the following Monday or work day in case of a holiday. The building inspection routing slip is usually ready by 7:30 a.m. the following morning.

2016 Building Codes

Contractors, Design Professionals, Developers, Home-Owners, Public in General: On January 1, 2017, the new 2016 California Building Code will become effective for all new permit applications as prescribed within adopted Ordinance 0-26-16. Please see the Q&A 2016 Building Code Information Bulletin (PDF) for more information

The 2016 California Building Standards Code (CBSC), that were adopted by Colton, became effective statewide on January 1, 2017. Included in the new CBSC are:

  • 2016 California Building Code
  • 2016 California Residential Code
  • 2016 California Plumbing Code
  • 2016 California Electrical Code
  • 2016 California Mechanical Code
  • 2016 California Fire Code
  • 2016 California Green Building Standards Code

Additionally, the City of Colton adopted amendments to these codes which also became effective on January 6, 2017. These amendments, plus other building codes adopted, are found in our Municipal Code Title 15.
