    Salary: $5,195 - $6,312 per month

    THE POSITION
    Under the general supervision of the Police Sergeant or other higher level police personnel, performs the full array of duties and responsibilities assigned to classes in the Police Officer series including responding to all calls for service from the public, patrolling City streets and enforcing Federal, State and local laws; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assists in the training of less experienced police officers; performs a variety of other tasks in support of the City’s law enforcement efforts.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Education and/or Experience: A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent to a high school diploma and specialized training in policing.
    License/Certificate: Possession of a valid class C California driver’s license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid and appropriate POST certificate. Note: Specialized assignments may require specialized license or certificates, as determined by the department.
    Knowledge of: Modern principles, practices, methods, and techniques of public safety. Technical phases of crime prevention and law enforcement including investigation and identification, patrol, traffic control, juvenile delinquency control, record keeping, and care and custody of persons and property. Self-defense tactics. Interviewing and interrogation techniques. Applicable laws, ordinances, and regulations affecting the work of the department. Operational characteristics of firearms and other modern police equipment. Functions and objectives of Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Modern office equipment including a computer and applicable software.
    Ability to: Effectively coordinate assigned work activities. Analyze complex community and/or law issues and determine appropriate actions. Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and policies. Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff. Meet and deal with the public tactfully and effectively. Gather, assemble, analyze, evaluate, and use evidence. Think and act quickly and appropriately in emergency situations. Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports. Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties. Interpret and apply laws and regulations. Make adjustments to standard operating procedures as is appropriate. Work independently. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Speak English/Spanish highly desirable.
    Skill to: Effectively operate a vehicle at high and normal speeds on City streets. Effectively operate and use deadly weapon.
