Sarah S. Zamora won election to the City Council as representative for District 6 in November 2000 and did not seek re-election at the end of her four-year term in 2004. In August 16, 2011, the Colton City Council appointed Sarah to fill the position of Mayor, which was vacated by her late husband and Former Mayor David R Zamora. David died in July 2011--just eight months after winning his 2010 election as Mayor. Sarah will serve the remainder of David’s four year term, ending December 2014.
U.S. Congressman Joe Baca, Sr., administered the oath of office to Mayor Zamora. After taking the oath, Sarah commented to the audience, “This appointment to Mayor is bittersweet for me and I will strive to serve the remainder of my term with David’s vision guiding me.” Mayor Sarah Zamora’s focus is to govern the City of Colton with the will of the people.
Prior to her election to the City Council, Zamora served on the Colton Parks and Recreation Commission for two years. She also served on the Colton Joint Unified School District’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Commission and was a member of the CJUSD School Site Selection Committee, which selected the site of the new Grand Terrace High School. Currently, Mayor Zamora serves on various intergovernmental agencies and represents the City at the local, regional and state level. Her recent Board appointments include serving as Board Member for ICRMA, IVDA, SANBAG and SBIAA agencies and as an Alternate Board Member for AMIGA, Omnitrans and SCAG agencies.
Personal
Zamora was born to Salathiel Aguilar Ramirez and Sarah Louise Soto Ramirez in San Bernardino, California, on February 23, 1955. She attended public elementary school in San Bernardino to the middle of the fifth grade. After moving to Colton with her family, she completed fifth grade at Wilson Elementary School and then attended sixth grade at Paul J. Rogers Elementary School. She attended 7th and 8th grade at Colton Middle School until she and her parents returned to San Bernardino, where she completed middle school. She graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1973.
After graduating from San Bernardino High School, Zamora enrolled at California State University, San Bernardino, intending to study public administration, but transferred to Skadron Business College, San Bernardino which had awarded her a scholarship. She graduated from Skadron in 1975. During the mid-1970’s, Zamora worked for the City of San Bernardino as a typist clerk in the Office of the late Mayor Bob Holcomb. She was crowned Miss San Bernardino in 1975.
Mayor Zamora and her late husband, David, were married 35 years and have three daughters--Mia, Summer and Alexa. Mia is a graduate of UCR and received her graduate degree at UCLA and now married to her husband Scott with two children, Summer is a graduate of UCR and completed her Masters at CSUSB is now married to her husband Enoc with two children. Alexa is currently attending UCR. In memory of her beloved husband David, Mayor Zamora continues to be an avid participant with local school programs and community events. Her personal priorities are to enjoy quality time with God, her family, and especially her four grandchildren.
